Why is the day directly following a public holiday not available as a pay day?

If you want to know why the day after a public holiday is always greyed out on the Thankyou Payroll calendar, read on.

Updated: July 2023

With 365 bank processing that launched at the end of May 2023, a number of New Zealand banks switched to 7-day processing. This means that payments are processed daily, including on public holidays. As a result, we will be able to limit the disruption to your payroll process caused by public holidays. For more information, please follow this link.

If your bank has not switched to 7-day processing, the following article will apply to your payroll.

When choosing a pay day, the calendar will have the day directly after a public holiday greyed out, the same way as it greys out Mondays. This means that you cannot choose that day as a pay day.

In this example, Monday 10th April is Easter Monday which is a public holiday. Therefore Tuesday 11th April is greyed out in the calendar and cannot be selected as a pay day.

In this example where the payday was Tuesday 11th April (unavailable), the pay will process on Wednesday 12th April, or they can select Friday 7th April as a pay day.

Why is this? Well, banks are closed on public holidays so we cannot process pays in the evening of a public holiday. This is the same reason Sundays and Mondays cannot be pay days. Think of it this way: Thankyou Payroll process pays the evening before pay day, so banks have to be open for business.
