Before you start

If your bank has signed up to 365 Banking, you will be able to run pays over Matariki. Check out this help article for more information.

Before starting this process, you will need the following:

  • the date of your scheduled pay day,
  • how your pay is processed.

When is Matariki public holiday observed this year?

The actual date for Matariki public holiday varies, but it is observed on Friday 14th July in 2023.

Do I need to make changes to my payroll?

Friday 14th July can be a pay day as usual.

However, Saturday 15th July cannot be a pay day. This is because the banks close on Friday 14th July for the public holiday so we can’t process your pay in time.

Additionally, depending on your plan, your pay day and your payment method, you may need to adjust your pay to ensure it arrives on time.*

Employer obligations

Some of your employees might work on Matariki public holiday, or take the day off. Some may even take annual leave. This will impact how you enter their timesheets. Find out how to enter public holidays.

If your employee works on a public holiday, you are required to pay them ‘time and a half’ or 1.5 times their standard rate for this day. If the public holiday is an otherwise working day for this employee, you’ll also need to allocate alternative holidays to their leave balance.
